Big Air Paragliding

Pre-flight checklist for paragliders

Updated October 16, 2026

A checklist works because it removes memory from the equation. Do the same checks every time, in the same order.

1. Before leaving home

  • Forecast checked for wind, thermals, stability and rain.
  • Airspace and local rules reviewed.
  • Phone charged; emergency contact informed.

2. Equipment check

  • Wing: inspect fabric, stitching, lines and risers. Lay out cleanly, with no tangles or knots.
  • Harness: buckles closed and doubled where required; leg and chest straps correct; protector in place.
  • Reserve: handle accessible; pin in place and bridle connected.
  • Helmet: secure and properly fitted.
  • Instruments: variometer and radio switched on.

3. Launch environment

  • Wind direction and strength on launch match your wing and skill.
  • Launch area clear of obstacles and other pilots.
  • Look at windsocks and clouds, and observe other pilots before committing.

4. The last-second check

Use a short mnemonic like “H.L.W.R.”: Helmet, Leg straps (and chest strap), Wing (leading edge open, lines free) and Radio/Reserve. Then confirm direction, and go.

5. After landing

  • Pack the wing, clean away debris and check for damage.
  • Note anything odd for later inspection.
