Pokhara is a popular base for Himalayan paragliding. The main launch at Sarangkot overlooks Phewa Lake and, on clear mornings, the snow-covered Annapurna and Machhapuchhre peaks. Many flights are tandems, and the area is also used by solo pilots and instructors.

Season

  • October to November: the classic window, with clear air and stable weather.
  • February to April: good days, though it is warmer and hazier.
  • June to September: monsoon, with heavy rain and cloud. Generally not suitable.

Flying notes

  • Mornings are calm and give the best visibility. Thermals build later in the day, so a late-morning flight may be bumpy.
  • The landing area is by the lakeside. Follow the instructions of your operator and local rules.
  • Altitude and temperature: it can be chilly at launch; bring layers.

Choosing an operator

For tandem flights, choose one with certified pilots, clear insurance information and well-maintained gear. Ask about the glider age and the reserve. If you are a licensed pilot flying solo, check with local clubs for site rules.

Beyond flying

Pokhara is also a trekking hub, with routes into the Annapurna region. It is easy to combine a flight with a trek.
