Interlaken sits between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, ringed by the Bernese Alps. It is one of the most developed paragliding destinations in Switzerland, with many schools and tandem operators, and a spectacular backdrop of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau on clear days.

Where people fly

  • Beatenberg / Niederhorn: the best-known launch area on the slopes above Lake Thun, reached by a cable car and road. Flights typically land in the valley near Interlaken.
  • Harder Kulm and nearby slopes: an alternative when wind direction suits.
  • Landing area: the open landing meadows in the Interlaken valley are shared with tandem operators. Follow the posted approach direction and the windsock.

Season

Late spring to early autumn provides the most flyable days. Summer afternoons bring strong valley winds and thermals, so mornings are popular for beginners and tandems. Winter flying is possible in stable high pressure but days are short and cold.

What to know

  1. Foehn. A strong, warm wind from the south can build quickly in the Alps and make flying dangerous. Local schools know the signs. If foehn is forecast, don’t fly.
  2. Traffic. On busy days there can be dozens of tandems. Keep your launch short and clear the area.
  3. Rules and insurance. Switzerland has clear rules for licences and liability; check that your licence is recognised and your insurance covers you.
  4. Weather changes fast. Afternoon thunderstorms can develop in summer.

Good for

Scenery flights, tandem trips, and well-supported solo flying. Experienced pilots can explore cross-country along the surrounding ridges with a local briefing.
