Monte Grappa rises from the Veneto plain to the north of Bassano del Grappa, and its steep south-facing slopes catch sun and wind early. It has been a paragliding and hang gliding destination for decades and is one of the most popular spots in northern Italy.

Why pilots like it

  • Early, reliable thermals: the south-facing slope warms quickly, so there are flyable hours even in shoulder seasons.
  • Large community and facilities: schools, shops and clubs around Bassano make it easy to get local advice and rent or repair gear.
  • Variety: pilots go from mellow soaring to cross-country flights across the Prealps.

Season

Spring to autumn is best. Winter can offer sunny, stable days, but check conditions carefully.

Cautions

  • Thermals can be strong in the middle of the day, particularly in summer.
  • Afternoon valley winds make landing in the plain demanding. Plan the approach before leaving the hill.
  • Fog or low cloud over the plain can make landing difficult in autumn and winter. Check conditions at the landing field before launching.
  • Local rules: respect the designated landing areas and any restrictions.

Visiting pilots

Contact a local school or club before flying. They can brief you on launches, landing fields and the day’s wind.
