Bali (Timbis & Bukit), Indonesia: coastal cliff soaring
Bali’s Bukit Peninsula offers coastal soaring over turquoise water. The best-known site is Timbis, a cliff launch above the ocean where the afternoon sea breeze meets the cliff and makes ridge lift. Landings are typically on the beach below the launch.
Season
The dry season (roughly April to October) gives steadier wind. In the wet season rain and variable winds reduce flying days.
Conditions
- Onshore wind is the norm, making soaring straightforward on good days.
- A short, steep launch and strong, gusty winds can be challenging for inexperienced pilots.
- Sea-breeze lift typically builds in the late morning and holds into the afternoon.
Safety
- Fly with a local operator or an experienced local pilot.
- Beach landing zones are shared with tourists, so keep a safe approach.
- Check equipment condition: salt air and heat are hard on fabric and lines.
Getting there
Timbis is about an hour from Ngurah Rai airport (Denpasar) by road. Local schools can arrange transport and flights.
